Kokeshi are said to have originated in the hot spring areas of the Tohoku region in the late Edo period. The features of kokeshi vary depending on where they are made, and are broadly divided into 11 different types, including the Tsuchiyu Onsen variety. Alongside Togatta and Naruko, Tsuchiyu Onsen is said to be one of the three main birthplaces of kokeshi, and have been a favorite souvenir of many visitors to the hot spring.
